Stress in the workplace is becoming more common these days.
Among factors that contribute to workplace stress are
competition among employees, large workloads, negative work
attitudes, quality control, legal challenges, training, and
office politics. It is time for the management to be aware
of how serious stress levels are in their respective
departments and review the best Stress Management solutions
for its employees. Here are the top ten causes of stress as
described by The Global Business and Economic Round Table on
Addiction and Mental Health:
1. Lack of Control - It is vital to take into account the
opinion of workers on the ground before implementing a
new policy that could change their work orientation. If
workers are forced to accept change when they have no say at
all, they would feel that their voice is unimportant to the
management. View how employees respond to the ideas, and
consider any alternative that would create a win-win
situation for both parties rather than force-feeding
employees. Stress management is about having a productive
and effective work environment.
2. Lack of Communication - Two-way communication is always
the best method when it comes to conveying messages to all
workers. Hold a session on Employee Communication to
announce company profit, lost, revenue, future planning,
current situation, bonuses, etc. instead of using static
communication tools like memos all the time. Be open to
their suggestions. When this is successful, you will see
that everybody is proactive and contributing where
communication is concerned.
3. No Appreciation - When an employee shows better job
performance, or improves on attendance or in any other
aspects of job, sincere praise would greatly increase their
motivation and self-confidence. Small gifts on their
birthdays will also make them feel appreciated. Tell them
how much the company appreciates their service. Nothing
enlightens a busy day more than having a caring and
appreciative boss.
4. No Feedback, Good or Bad - Let the employees know if
they have been doing things right or if they need to improve
on some areas by providing professional feedback through
personalized reply. When they submit their work, or propose
some ideas to you, at least listen to them. Occasionally
employers may not even realize that some workers feel
ignored, stressed and in need of some attention.
5. Career and Job Ambiguity - Helplessness happens when
people are feeling uncertain about their jobs, especially
when rumors like salary delay, retrenchment, mergers, and
plant closing spreads. It is important to keep workers
informed about current situations despite the already
stressed situation.
6. Unclear Policies and No Sense of Direction - In order to
get employees to understand company policies, we must
encourage both passive and active two-way communication
through bulletins, group discussions and memos and ensure
that the message is clear to everybody. Distribute printouts
of guidelines to the relevant employees to reduce chaos in
the workplace. Also allow some time for employees to adjust
to any new situations.
7. Mistrust and Unfairness -Be careful of how you treat your
employees and try your best to be fair, unbiased and
balanced in your judgments. Keep an open-door policy with
employees to avoid misunderstanding, and to help find out
what people think about managerial decisions. Treat
everybody equally to build sense of trust between you and
the employees.
8. Pervasive Uncertainty - Reinforcing new policies may give
stress to employees as they may be used to the old style of
doing their job. To help them out, prepare detailed
instructions in black and white for everyone to refer to.
One good tip on reducing the stress is to train the
employees whenever there are new implementations in the
office, to provide the knowledge on the new policies.
9. Random Interruptions - Walk-ins, call-ins, ringing mobile
phones, and spontaneous, constant demands from managers and
supervisors always disturb employee focus on the job he's
doing and stresses him out. Proper allocation of time, work
distribution, and knowing how to handle busy situation can
reduce this stress.
10. Workload - Having too much to do, or too little to do
can also put stress on people. Managers must be aware of the
amount of work they are putting on everyone and help to
prioritize which task comes first. They should also know the
right number of people to hire. Divide work according to
each employee's expertise, and give training for those who
are lacking experience.
Stress management in the workplace is vital. Stress-related
illness like heart attack, insomnia, high blood pressure,
and mental problems are on the rise and can be the result of
not having proper stress management techniques in place.

How To Manage Your Stress
By Lillian F Tighe
Stress and tension are part of most people lives and
threaten your health in many ways. Stress can come in the
form of accidents, financial difficulties, problems at work,
family issues, and poor health. The way to manage stress has
a lot to do with your mental, emotional, and physical
health. The following are some ways that you can manage the
stress in your life:
1. Try to find out what is causing your stress.
2. Examine your life and see if it is possible to make changes
in the areas that are causing you stress.
3. Relaxation techniques such as massage, deep breathing,
meditation, or yoga may help to relieve your stress.
4. Exercise or other physical activity will help you deal with
stress.
5. When you feel overwhelmed by everything you have to do,
create a checklist and arrange your priorities. You will
get satisfaction when you complete the tasks you have set
yourself.
6. Avoid sugar, fats, tobacco, caffeine, and alcohol to help
your body and mind to cope with stress.
7. Getting enough sleep is really important.
8. Find someone to talk to if things are bothering you. You
can talk to family, friends or find a support group.
9. Volunteering can give you a sense of purpose and increase
your self esteem and reduce your stress.
10. Relax by reading a book or watching a movie, listening to
music or working at a hobby you enjoy.
11. Practice anger management. If you feel that you have
problems dealing with you anger find a support group that
you can join.
12. A vacation from your regular life, even if only for a
weekend, will help you deal with stress.
13. Don't take on too much at one time. Learn to take it easy.
14. Don't try to be perfect in everything that you do.
15. Remember that being judgmental is likely to do you more
harm than the people you are judging.
16. Always try to see the amusing side of any situation.
Laughter is the best medicine.
17. Move your head from side to side and rotate you neck in a
circle to reduce the tension in your neck and jaw.
18. Set small and smart goals for yourself and then work
carefully and realistically towards achieving them. Keep in
mind that unrealistic goals never seem to be reached and
this can add to your stress level. Try to set a goal for
yourself this week by using the SMART approach:
SPECIFIC: Choose one little goal and write it down.
MEASURABLE: How will you know when it is done?
ACHIEVABLE: Make sure it is not too big.
REWARDED: When you have finished, how will you reward
yourself?
TIME-LIMITED: Can you set an achievable deadline?

Common Causes Of Migraine Headaches
With the fast paced lifestyle we all lead nowadays, it's not
uncommon that more and more people are getting migraines as
a result of the stress. This greatly affects our productivity,
not to mention our quality of living. Thus, modern medicine
has tried to come up with a battery of drugs to battle this
growing pandemic.
But even with recent medical and technological advances,
most doctors and scientist still can't identify the specific
factors involved in causing migraines. Some argue that it
has to do with the amount of serotonin in our brains. They
claim that when serotonin levels drop, the sudden imbalance
can lead to a migraine.
A migraine usually presents itself with a number of symptoms.
People often experience light sensitivities, with some saying that
they can see colors or spots in their vision. Others claim
that their scalp feels soft to the touch.
Mood swings are also a common symptom of migraines. People
can go from happy to sad, calm to angry, right before a
migraine hits, making it uncomfortable for the suffering
person and the people around them.
Most migraines usually come and go, but one that lasts for
days may be a sign of a more serious problem. Most stem
from personal bad habits, such as stress and an unhealthy diet.
Sleep and drinking plenty of fluids usually help, but you
can also take a few of the dozen or more over the counter
medicines designed to help relieve migraines.
With all that said, it's important to reduce the amount of
stress in your life. Not only is it unhealthy, but it is
one of the most common causes of migraine headaches. If
you do get a migraine headache attack, just try to relax and
find a quiet place to lie down. Pick some place dark, to
cut the effects of light sensitivity, and apply a cold
compress to your head, while gently massaging your scalp
every so often.
Food sensitivities are also known to trigger migraines.
Dairy and those containing dairy products, such as milk and
coffee, can also trigger migraine headaches, as well as food
additives like MSG. Excessive consumption of these foods
react with a person's body chemistry, triggering the onset of
a migraine headache.

Energy Drinks Are Not Healthy
How can energy drinks be healthy? They are usually full of
artificial caffeine, HFCS (ref:
Double Danger of HFCS), Taurine and of course, to somehow
validate everything, synthetically produced vitamins. This
cocktail of chemicals will do more harm than good. It
already has.
More and more people that consume the traditional energy
drink regularly or even daily have already or are destined
to eventually suffer from stomach, kidney, liver or heart
problems. Not to mention the effects these chemical
cocktails can have on one's teeth (premature enamel
degradation) or skin (dehydration related blotching).
An entire new generation is coming into adulthood without
their parents' coffee routine, but with a morning, afternoon
or evening energy drink. Sometimes all three. Many spend
hours online gaming, instead of exercising, which
accentuates the problem with energy drinks, introducing type
2 diabetes and other sedentary diseases.
Why should we be concerned about this new variety of mental
stimulant? A cup or two of coffee every day has never caused
serious health effects. The big difference relates to where
the buzz comes from: natural coffee beans vs. laboratory
produced synthetic caffeine.
Just like with any other product found in nature, the
caffeine in the coffee beans comes with many by-products
which are not easily separated from the pure caffeine
elements. natural caffeine comes with fibers and other
organic substances which reduce the absorption of the
caffeine into the bloodstream.
In most energy drinks, the caffeine is synthetically
produced in a factory. This synthetic caffeine has one
advantage over natural caffeine: it is extremely potent.
All of the natural byproducts that come with natural caffeine
from coffee beans or Guarana are not present with laboratory
caffeine. It is also much cheaper to produce than natural
caffeine, another great thing, from the manufacturer's point
of view. Unfortunately, from a consumer's point of view, this
concentrated caffeine blast is absorbed into the bloodstream
almost as soon as it hits the stomach.
Natural products like the actual coffee from coffee beans,
Guarana seeds or tea leaves, are absorbed more gradually by
the body. They are also not as concentrated and therefore
less toxic than the chemical caffeine in most energy drinks.
Here are some advantages of natural caffeine (whether it be
in coffee, tea or Guarana). Firstly, the increased mental
alertness is longer. Instead of the instant high you get
from most energy drinks and then the subsequent downfall,
you get a sustained feeling of mental clarity for a few
hours and the effect eventually wears off more naturally and
gradually.
Secondly, continuous exposure to synthetic caffeine over
saturates our nervous system. If this excessive exposure
continues, our nerves go haywire. This is Mother Nature's
way of telling us to be careful. Our hands may quiver,
nervous habits develop; our body starts to show signs of
stress not different from those related to anxiety or
depression. Not recommended for anyone.
With guaranine or tea or natural coffee beans, our digestive
and circulatory system can easily eliminate the excess
quantities without unduly affecting the nervous system. But
even with natural stimulants, they must be used carefully
and not in excessive amounts. It is best to stick with one
cup per day; of coffee (not the grande which is really like
6 coffees) or one 12 oz can of a natural energy drink or
unsweetened cold tea.
Organic coffees don't contain any of the chemicals used in
large farming operations. (http://www.wholefoods.com) Whole
Foods Markets has a wide variety of these.
Some natural energy drinks that are recommended :
GURU Energy Drinks and Syzmo. They are both made with
natural caffeine from Guarana and/or coffee. What's good
about GURU is that it is entirely natural, has no
artificial sweeteners or vitamins. Sysmo is made from good
ingredients but is more costly, and is an acquired taste.
Both of these are available on the
respective companies' website and at
(http://www.wholefoods.com) Whole Foods Markets.
With regards to teas; cold, brewed teas will provide the
best combination of anti-oxidants and natural caffeine. A
good brand is ITOEN, from Japan. Itoen Teas seems to be
the purest, unsweetened product out there. The Zen taste
grows on you after a couple of bottles. Another cool brand is
the US based Honest Tea, but they recently sold out to Coke
and now it seems they're selling out to the sweeter American
taste buds.

Relaxation And Stress Management
Many people get caught up in their day to day lives and
focus on the future which can bring about anxiety or stress.
Stress can cause many problems such as concentration issues,
lack of good judgment, negativity and lack of productivity.
The best way to combat these feelings of stress is through relaxation.
Relaxation plays a key roll in leading a healthy happy life.
Relaxation takes as little as ten minutes a day and can be as simple
as breathing exercises, or as challenging as a kick boxing class,
the choice is yours.
Relaxation can happen anywhere, at work, at home or on a
little deserted island off the coast of Mexico. Unfortunately
not everyone can take a nice vacation to that dream island or
a seven year sabbatical. Many need to learn to relax in the
comfort of their own homes and lives. The key is to find something
you enjoy and teach your mind to relax when you do it.
There are many ways in which you can relax. Finding your
method is really your biggest obstacle, but it is easy, just
think about what you enjoy most. Maybe you like listening to
music, reading, meditating or walking. Any of these
activities can be a relaxation method and can be scaled down
to as little as ten minutes.
Watching TV, listening to music, surfing the web and
reading all offer a break from regular day to day
situations. They each create an alternative world that is
entirely your own. Your mind visually escapes into a place
that is different and exciting instead of dull, boring and
always the same as so many of us think our lives are.
Learning to control your breathing and meditation can be a
little more complicated since you must learn these
techniques in order for them to work properly. Meditation
can help you learn to reflect on situations and to control
your breathing to calm your mind. These techniques need to
be mastered and exercised in order to achieve the maximum
result. Once you have achieved your goal, you can relax at
the drop of a hat and find inner control in as little as ten
minutes.
Other people prefer to hit the gym to relax. Some like to
run, walk or lift weights. Others might prefer cycling,
kick boxing or tai chi classes. Running and walking burn off
excessive built up energy, however not everyone wants to run
a marathon. For them there are other types of classes which
sole purpose is relaxation such as yoga. Many people choose
to skip the classes and gym all together and simply walk
their dogs in the park.
Your body will tell you what it likes and what it doesn't
like, you just need to learn to listen. Take note of what
worked and what didn't while you were practicing different
relaxing techniques. If one doesn't work don't be afraid to
try a different approach. Make sure to keep yourself
motivated by reminding yourself you will be healthier and
happier in the end and think how nice it is to do something
enjoyable.
Teaching your body something new is always a challenge,
however once you get the hang of it, it is like riding a
bike, your body won't forget how. It is important to find an
activity which you enjoy and know you will stick with, but
you must make a conscious effort to remind and train your
body to relax while performing this task. It may take time,
but in the end the rewards will be fantastic for your mind,

Panic Attacks and Anxiety
Although panic attacks and anxiety can be related to each
other, they can also be completely separate entities with
their own set of symptoms. Either of these conditions can
become problematic if the symptoms escalate beyond the
normal range. It is at this point, that treatment will need
to be sought.
Anxiety is a reaction to stress, and this is considered to
be normal. It is something that can help someone deal with
tense situations in different areas of one's life, such as
at work, school, or just something that requires facing a
crowd of people. If anxiety starts to become an excessive
and irrational dread of facing everyday situations, it has
crossed into the area of a disabling disorder.
Panic attacks and anxiety differ in the fact that, while
anxiety usually builds to a point, panic attacks can hit at
any time with no warning. Unlike anxiety, a panic attack is
an irrational fear of something that can't be named. There
is rarely any obvious reason for the feelings of panic, and
is much more intense than the feelings of anxiety or being
overly stressed.
One out of every 75 people in the world will have a panic
attack at some point in their lives. The good news is that
most of these adults will never have another panic attack.
However, these statistics show that panic attacks and
anxiety are the most common emotional disorders, even more
so than bipolar disorders, ADHD, depression, OCD
schizophrenia, phobias, and alcohol abuse. In addition to
this, people suffering from panic and anxiety disorders
rarely go looking for help with their problem.
Of course, there are similarities between panic attacks and
anxiety attacks, and anxiety attacks can lead to panic
attacks. Suffer from enough anxiety and it can escalate into
a panic attack. So if you begin to find yourself becoming
overly anxious, it's time to get help in bringing it under
control before it gets too much to cope with.
Panic attacks and anxiety are not pleasant and can actually
become quite debilitating. But people who suffer from
anxiety or panic attacks can take some comfort in knowing
there is help around to lead a regular life. All it takes is
asking for the help you need.

is much more intense than the feelings of anxiety or being
overly stressed.

The Easiest Way To Reduce Stress
I admit exercise is not the most exciting subject to think
about. But regular exercise will help you reduce stress in
your life, which will improve your sense of well being and
lead to a more enjoyable life experience. If you haven't
been exercising regularly, overcoming procrastination is the
hardest part.
Stress reduction is a great reason to get the exercise ball
rolling. How often have you heard someone you know say about
an ailment, "it's just stress related"? Most folks have a
tendency to make light of stress, but it's a fact that too
much stress in your life can eventually lead to illness and
even serious health problems. So starting an exercise
regimen to reduce stress in your life could be one of THE
most important decisions you make.
Exercise will help strengthen your immune system and bring
your stress level down. Even simple activities like
stretching, walking, jogging or hiking will strengthen your
heart, lungs and muscles and increase your endurance.
Walking could be the smartest exercise choice you could
make. No equipment or gear of any kind is required and you
can walk anywhere, anytime. Walking can be enjoyable,
especially if you go with a partner and just enjoy each
other's company. Going for a walk with a friend will make it
something to look forward to.
Slowly increase the intensity of your walking workout to
increase the health benefits. Pick up the pace and walk a
bit further each week. Walking can be the best overall
activity for your health if you do it properly. That means
pushing yourself so you maintain your target heart rate for
20 minutes or so. If you don't know your target heart rate,
you can easily check it online. Buy a good quality heart rate
monitor if you don't have one.
Make sure to do some basic stretching before you walk for
the purpose of loosening up the muscles in your neck,
shoulders and legs. Doing so will start the blood flowing
and help to prevent unwanted injuries.
There are a variety of activities that you could choose that
will help reduce stress in your life. But walking is easy
and inexpensive. It's an activity that allows you to get
your workout in fast, and that's important if you are on a
tight schedule. You can do your stretches and your walk, in
as little as 30-35 minutes. Surely you can find half an
hour a day for something that will make you healthier.
Even if you have to settle for a short walk occasionally,
the exercise and socializing will definitely reduce stress
over time. So grab a pair of comfy shoes and a heart rate
monitor, and walk as often as you can. It will reduce stress
levels, and it will make you feel wonderful.
