Fungus Fears and worthwhile options for considertation

The appearance of a virulent fungus has been reported in the Pacific Northwest. Reports say that people have been treated with antiobiotics and I haven't seen much reference to antifungal drugs. While I'm scratching my head on that one, since both classes of drugs can have deleterious side effects, I'm certain my approach hasn't been calculated in mainstream medicine.

Many years ago now, when the SARS virus was circulating, I suggested some different antiviral and antifungal therapies.

Currently we have a new garlic formula available in the form of Alli-C Garlic is an outstanding antibiotic and antifungal. This new form is the equivalent of 35 cloves of garlic in one capsule.

Colloidal Silver is a very good product to consider,and when used only to treat infection or other issues it can be very helpful. I am not one to encourage the everyday prophylactic use of colloidal silver. I'll have a new article coming soon with more information on the history and use of CS.

I suggest vitamin A in a combination form that allows for the conversion of beta-carotene to vitamin A. This helps protect the lining of your lungs and respiratory system as well as assisting should you develop pneumonia.

And for heavy hitting I am all for pure therapeutic essential oils.

Get a high quality professional nebulizer and a supply of one or more of these excellent choices - organic is best -
  • Oregano
  • Lemon
  • Melaleuca (can also be helpful with malaria and tuberculosis)

    Chest congestion may be helped with old fashioned mustard plasters, staying adequately hydrated (two cups of sage tea daily unless you have seizure disorder, or peppermint tea). Lemonade is also very good as it adds flavor, helps cleanse your liver, adds vitamin C, and you can eat the peel if it is organic.

    Up your intake of vitamin C to tolerance levels and make sure you taking adequate amounts of vitamin D3 and E.

    Hydrotherapy may also assist you in relaxing and removing toxins from your body. Drinking a cup of yarrow tea while soaking encourages detoxification and fever reducing. If you'd like more information please let us know.

    What's Keeping You Healthy and Protected from the Flu?

    The flu is in the news again. This time it's the swine flu, scarier sounding than bird flu. Scary enough to cause worldwide panic. The news is brimming over with dire reports. And mega-pharmacy Hoffman-La Roche is ready in the wings with millions of doses of its drug Tamiflu to sell for a hefty profit.

    The best preventive for the flu is to eat a healthy diet of whole foods and to take a few supplements that maintain a strong immune system.

    For children - Immune System Supplements for Kids

    Children can take a few simple, specific supplements to maintain a strong and vital immune system during the fall and winter months when colds and flus predominate.

    An omega-3 fat supplement in the form of fish oil capsules or liquid fish oil will establish healthy cell membranes that prevent inflammation and resist toxins and attack by pathogens.

    Vitamin D is essential for kids as well as adults to maintain immune function. Vitamin E will ensure that fatty acids are maintained at optimum efficiency once they are absorbed into cells. In addition, vitamin E has anti-inflammatory effects and increases resistance to infection. Use only natural vitamin E (d-alpha-tocopherol), not the synthetic form (dl-alpha-tocopherol). A mixed tocopherol form of vitamin E is best because children need the gamma as well as the alpha forms. An appropriate dose is 100 mg for children under two and 200 mg for children aged 2-12.

    Vitamin A is needed for proper mucous membrane function. It is essential for the growth and repair of body tissues, and for efficient digestion of protein. Vitamin A promotes good eyesight, strong bones and teeth, and a vital immune system. White blood cells, T -lymphocytes, and every cell in the important mucosal barriers of the respiratory, digestive, and urinary tracts require vitamin A.

    A diet containing significant amounts of fruit and fat will help ensure adequate vitamin A intake. Whole milk products, butter, and free range eggs will help maintain necessary levels of this important nutrient. Use organic sources. For those who may not be getting enough vitamin A, a supplement is essential.

    The recommended daily amount (RDA) of vitamin A is 1,000-2,000 IU for children, depending on their age (1,000 at one year of age, 2,000 by age nine). Primitive diets probably maintained 10 times that amount. One egg contains 300 IU, one cup of whole milk or whole milk yogurt contains about 225-250 IU of vitamin A. One tablespoon of butter contains 350 IU of A. The amount of vitamin A may vary by the season and the feed of the animals.

    Colostrum is great for children as well as adults.

    Zinc stimulates immune function, prevents infections, and acts as a cofactor in many enzyme reactions, including the creation of antioxidants. Normal dosage is 10-20 mg. per day. If zinc supplementation is continued over a prolonged period of time, it should be given in conjunction with copper in a ratio of ten to one to prevent copper deficiency.

    Vitamin C has anti-inflammatory effects, antioxidant activity, and antibiotic qualities. A daily supplement of vitamin C during the winter months will round out the immune system prevention program. Use 500 mg for children under 3 years old and 1,000 mg for older children.

    The easiest way to give supplements to children is through powdered sources mixed in a blender with fruit, fruit juice, yogurt or milk (rice milk for younger children and children with milk sensitivities), and honey (for children over 12 months old). Capsules can be opened and dumped into the blender. Children can chew oil-based supplements in soft gels or you can stick a pin into them and squirt out the contents onto something they will eat.

    Immune Supplements for Children—Daily Dosage

    1- to 2-year-olds, 3 to 12-year-olds

    Fish oil 1 tsp per 50 pounds body weight
    Vitamin D 1,000, IU 2,000 IU
    Colostrum ½ teaspoon, 1 tsp
    Zinc 10 mg, 20 mg
    Copper 1 mg, 2 mg
    Vitamin E (d-alpha-tocopherol or mixed tocopherols)
    100 IU, 200 IU
    Vitamin C 500 mg, 1,000 mg

    MRSA UPDATES

    This last two weeks found me working on my newsletter, herbalYODA Says! that was published on March 26. The topic was "The Color of Health".

    While I was researching material I found an abstract on the use of Blue Light for MRSA. This always is of interest to me because I have been cataloguing material on this topic since 1993.

    "Blue, vibrating at 450-495 nanometers, represents communication. It is located in the throat and is associated with the thyroid or metabolic system in your body. Blue is the coolest, purest and deepest color of the spectrum. It will help with rest, relaxation, sleep and regeneration. Blue is a good color to help with high blood pressure, lowering your heart rate, reduce stress and nervousness, and will calm your entire body. Looking into the blue sky on a sunny day is very calming to me.

    If you have headaches or sleeping difficulty, blue may help you. It also influences digestion, heart rate, cholesterol level, muscle strength and your mental state.

    Using blue in meditation may be helpful and it can also be used to improve communication, aid spiritual growth and facilitate higher mental function. It is the color of your creative power and will support you in a state of peace and balance.

    Blue light is suggested as a treatment for MRSA.

    Blue 470-nm Light Kills Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in Vitro

    Abstract

    Background Data: In a previous study, we showed that 405-nm light photo-destroys methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). The 390-420 nm spectral width of the 405-nm superluminous diode (SLD) source may raise safety concerns in clinical practice, because of the trace of ultraviolet (UV) light within the spectrum.

    Objective: Here we report the effect of a different wavelength of blue light, one that has no trace of UV, on two strains of MRSA-the US-300 strain of CA-MRSA and the IS-853 strain of HA-MRSA-in vitro. Materials and

    Methods: We cultured and plated each strain, and then irradiated each plate with 0, 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 19, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, or 60 J/cm2 of energy a single time, using a 470-nm SLD phototherapy device. The irradiated specimens were then incubated at 35°C for 24 h. Subsequently, digital images were made and quantified to obtain colony counts and the aggregate area occupied by bacteria.

    Results: Photo-irradiation produced a statistically significant dose-dependent reduction in both the number and the aggregate area of colonies formed by each strain (p _ 0.001). The higher the dose the more bacteria were killed, but the effect was not linear, and was more impressive at lower doses than at higher doses.

    Nearly 30% of both strains were killed with as little as 3 J/cm2 of energy. As much as 90.4% of the US-300 and the IS-853 colonies, respectively, were killed with an energy density of 55 J/cm2. This same dose eradicated 91.7% and 94.8% of the aggregate area of the US-300 and the IS-853 strains, respectively.

    Conclusion: At practical dose ranges, 470-nm blue light kills HA-MRSA and CA-MRSA in vitro, suggesting that a similar bactericidal effect may be attained in human cases of cutaneous and subcutaneous MRSA infections.
