Kettlebells: A New Twist on an Old Exercise

What is the goal of exercise? It is to help us get into shape and live longer. Using weights to enhance your workout also builds muscle and burns fat. One piece of equipment that helps you is the kettlebell.

What are kettlebells? They are of Russian origin. The original kettlebells were cast iron balls with handles. They were used in sports such as kettlebell lifting.

The kettlebells, that we have been introduced to in this country, have the same look but a different construction. They are weighted in different poundage with an easy-to-grip handle. More and more people have come to use the kettlebells as a total body fitness instrument.

When used properly, the kettlebell works the heart, lungs and the muscles. There are a variety of movements used. The most basic is the kettlebell swing. With one or two hands on the handle, the kettlebell is swung from between the legs up to about head height.

The Kettlebell Swing Explained

You provide the swing from your lower body and your back. Begin with the kettlebell positioned at your heels. When you squat to pick up the kettlebell, swing it up. Then, return to starting position and continue. Your arm provides a firm grip on the handle so you don’t hurt yourself. Even then, you can increase your arm strength as well as cardiovascular fitness from the reps.

Just mastering the swing works the midsection, your cardiovascular system and really burns the lower body muscles. You can perform an invigorating workout in a short amount of time.

The same moves that can be done with weights are done with the kettlebell. Since only one is used, the opposite hand is held straight out in front for balance. There are kettlebell DVDs available to show you how to incorporate the moves into a single workout.

Kettlebells can be stored out of the way without taking up much space. Keep them in your home office or in your bedroom or anywhere you decide to workout. When you get ready to exercise, they are already in place and you can move along pretty quickly.

No Bulky Equipment Necessary for Kettlebell Workouts

We are often worried about using lots of equipment in workouts. You don’t need anything but your kettlebell which makes it easier to stick with it. And, with both cardio and weight training in one workout, you are maximizing the time you have to work out for the best results.

If you are looking for a way to get your exercise in each day, try kettlebells. They are an all-purpose piece of exercise equipment that can fit into almost any busy person’s schedule.
